Colorado PT and PTA CEU requirements
What physical therapists and physical therapist assistants need to renew a Colorado license, summarized from the board's own rules. Last checked October 23, 2026.
Required topics
- No set topics. Under the board's Continuing Professional Development program you complete a self-assessment, write a learning plan, and do professional development activities (PDA) that match it.
Rules to know
- PTs: at least 20 of the 30 hours must be educational coursework, fellowships or residencies.
- PTAs: at least 15 of the 20 hours must be educational coursework, fellowships or residencies.
- Activities must be done during the license period right before your renewal, and they must relate to your learning plan.
- Two other ways to comply: Deemed Status (for example, holding a Colorado Department of Education special services license while employed by a school district for the whole period) or a pre-approved active duty military exemption.
- Travel and planning time don't count.
Official sources
- Colorado State Physical Therapy Board: Continuing professional competency
- Colorado State Physical Therapy Board: Applications and renewal
This is a plain-language summary to help you plan. Rules change and your board has the final word, so confirm with the sources above before you renew. These are physical therapy rules: OTs renew through the state's occupational therapy board, and athletic trainers also keep their BOC certification.
