Montana PT and PTA CEU requirements
What physical therapists and physical therapist assistants need to renew a Montana license, summarized from the board's own rules. Last checked October 24, 2026.
Required topics
None. Any course that meets the rules below counts.
Rules to know
- PTs and PTAs have the same requirement.
- CE isn't required until after your first renewal.
- Courses must relate to your scope of practice: review or update your knowledge, go beyond your entry-level education, or reinforce professional conduct and ethics.
- Hours required by a disciplinary order don't count toward the 8.
- Keep course details and certificates for 3 years. The department audits up to half of renewed licensees in odd-numbered years.
- You can ask for a hardship exemption.
- Montana merged its PT board into the new Board of Physical, Rehabilitative, and Developmental Health Care Professionals on January 1, 2026. The new board's proposed combined CE rule (May 2026) keeps 8 hours a year for physical therapists.

This is a plain-language summary to help you plan. Rules change and your board has the final word, so confirm with the sources above before you renew. These are physical therapy rules: OTs renew through the state's occupational therapy board, and athletic trainers also keep their BOC certification.
