Required topics
- At least 2 hours on professional ethics directly related to physical therapy, each cycle
- A self-study jurisprudence exam on the Minnesota Practice Act each year you renew (open book; you can retake it until you pass)
Rules to know
- PTs and PTAs have the same requirement.
- Courses from accredited universities, medical schools, APTA and other physical therapy associations, and FSBPT-approved courses are approved automatically. Others can be approved by the board.
- Up to 9 hours can come from scholarship (peer-reviewed publications and posters), and up to 9 from education and teaching.
- One hour of credit is 60 minutes of educational activity.
Official sources
- Minnesota Rules 5601.2100 to 5601.2700, Continuing education
- Minnesota Board of Physical Therapy: Continuing education
- Minnesota Statutes 148.73, Renewals
This is a plain-language summary to help you plan. Rules change and your board has the final word, so confirm with the sources above before you renew. These are physical therapy rules: OTs renew through the state's occupational therapy board, and athletic trainers also keep their BOC certification.
