Michigan PT and PTA CEU requirements
What physical therapists and physical therapist assistants need to renew a Michigan license, summarized from the board's own rules. Last checked October 23, 2026.
Required topics
- At least 1 credit in pain and symptom management
- Implicit bias training: at least 1 hour for each year of your license cycle (it can count toward your credits)
- A one-time training on identifying victims of human trafficking
Rules to know
- Michigan changed these rules on March 5, 2026, moving PTs and PTAs to a 3-year cycle with more credits.
- Credits must be earned in the 3 years before your license expires.
- No more than 12 credits from online programs completed in one 24-hour period.
- Approved continuing education courses can count for up to 30 credits; reading articles, conferences and other approved activities each have their own caps.
- You can't earn credit twice for the same or a substantially equivalent program in one renewal period.
- Keep proof of your credits for 4 years after you apply to renew.
Official sources
- Michigan Administrative Code R 338.7101 to R 338.7163, Physical therapy general rules (official, amended March 5, 2026)
- Mich. Admin. Code R 338.7004, Implicit bias training
This is a plain-language summary to help you plan. Rules change and your board has the final word, so confirm with the sources above before you renew. These are physical therapy rules: OTs renew through the state's occupational therapy board, and athletic trainers also keep their BOC certification.
