California PT and PTA CEU requirements
What physical therapists and physical therapist assistants need to renew a California license, summarized from the board's own rules. Last checked October 23, 2026.
Required topics
- 4 hours of basic life support, hands-on
- 2 hours of ethics, laws and regulations
Rules to know
- PTs and PTAs have the same requirement.
- Hours must be earned in the two years before your license expires.
- First renewal: if you renew on time, you need 15 hours (4 basic life support, 2 ethics and law, 9 other). If you renew late, you need the full 30.
- You don't send certificates with your renewal, but the board can ask for them.
