Alabama PT and PTA CEU requirements
What physical therapists and physical therapist assistants need to renew a Alabama license, summarized from the board's own rules. Last checked October 24, 2026.
Required topics
- 2 hours of Alabama jurisprudence covering the Practice Act and the Administrative Code at your first renewal, then in years ending in 0 or 5 (2030, 2035 and so on). General ethics courses don't count for this.
- PTs who see patients without a referral (direct access): 2 more hours, 12 in all
Rules to know
- PTs and PTAs have the same requirement.
- The board doesn't pre-approve courses. Any course directly related to your physical therapy practice that meets the board's general guidelines counts.
- Certificates are uploaded with the renewal application and must show the date, contact hours, objectives and audience.
- If you were licensed by exam in the past calendar year, you only need the 2 jurisprudence hours.
Official sources
This is a plain-language summary to help you plan. Rules change and your board has the final word, so confirm with the sources above before you renew. These are physical therapy rules: OTs renew through the state's occupational therapy board, and athletic trainers also keep their BOC certification.
