Dry needling in Colorado: the rules for physical therapists
Colorado's PT board rule makes dry needling part of PT practice and says it isn't acupuncture. You need a formal course with written and hands-on testing.
Rules to know
- A course split into parts lets you needle within what you've finished, but all 46 hours must be done within 2 years.
- Needling where there's risk of pneumothorax or serious neurovascular injury comes only after training and practice in lower-risk areas.
- Get written informed consent from each patient and offer them a copy.
- OTs: a 2026 law lets Colorado OTs dry needle starting September 1, 2027, once rules matching the PT standards are in place.

A plain-language summary, last checked October 24, 2026. Dry needling rules change often and some states regulate it through board statements rather than law, so confirm with your board before you dry needle. OTs and athletic trainers have their own rules.
