Dry needling in District of Columbia: the rules for physical therapists
DC's PT board says dry needling is within PT scope as long as you have documented education and training that make you competent. It isn't acupuncture.
Rules to know
- Online and self-study courses aren't what the board recommends. Dry needling in your entry-level CAPTE program can count.
- Get written informed consent stating your dry needling training and that the patient isn't receiving acupuncture.
- Write a separate procedure note for each treatment: how the patient tolerated it and the outcome.
- The burden of proof of your training is on you; the board can ask for it.
