Dry needling in Washington: the rules for physical therapists
Since 2023 Washington law (RCW 18.74.200) lets PTs perform intramuscular needling (dry needling) once they hold an intramuscular needling endorsement from the Department of Health (WAC 246-915-390, effective June 22, 2024).
Rules to know
- The 100 didactic hours cover musculoskeletal and neuromuscular anatomy and physiology, pain mechanisms, trigger points, universal precautions and emergency response. CAPTE pre-licensure coursework can count.
- After the instruction, you have up to 18 months to complete the 150 reviewed treatment sessions with a qualified provider.
- Dry needling can't be delegated, and you must stay with the patient for the whole procedure.
- Patients sign an informed consent form. The endorsement fee is $100.
